Nestled in the bowels of the Valais Alps, the Underground Lake of Saint-Léonard has never ceased to fascinate and amaze visitors since its discovery in 1943. But what is the story behind this geological jewel? Let's dive together into the depths of the earth to unravel the most intimate mysteries.
The first mentions of groundwater in Saint-Léonard go back a long time, when only a few winemakers dared to come and refresh their bottles of Fendant in the pond near the current entrance. It was in 1943, when an earthquake revealed a real underground cave, that the Swiss Society of Caving organized the first exploration of the lake. Since then, this unique site has never ceased to amaze visitors, attracted by its beauty and mysteries!

But what is the story behind the formation of this underground lake?
It all starts with the superposition of complex geological phenomena, resulting from millions of years of evolution. The north wall, made of black schist dating from the Carboniferous era, and the south wall, composed of marble, create a waterproof barrier that retains water inside the cave. In the middle of these two rocks is gypsum, a porous and water-soluble rock, which plays a crucial role in the formation of the lake.
The process of formation of the underground lake is the result of several geological phenomena, such as erosion caused by water on the gypsum. Runoff water infiltrates through the gypsum, forming underground roos that gradually grow over time. The gypsum, full of water, undergoes a process of "desquamation" that causes it to swell and detach, causing it to collapse towards the bottom of the cavity in formation.

The underground lake of Saint-Leonard is the largest natural and navigable underground lake in Europe, with an impressive length of 300 meters! Its clear and mysterious water attracts the curious, eager to uncover the secrets that hide under the surface.
To explore this jewel of nature, visitors board rowing boats, gliding silently through the submerged cave.
The Lac Souterrain de St-Léonard also offers concerts offering an unforgettable experience. The exceptional acoustic qualities and the magic of the place take on their full dimension during an artistic performance in this majestic setting.
These exceptional events take place in the very heart of the lake. The artists perform on a boat reserved for them, while the audience is installed on other boats just a few meters away.
I had the chance to attend a Pat Burgener concert. For this occasion, Pat had performed solo and acoustic, offering an intimate show close to the public.
These concerts promise an unforgettable experience for all music lovers!
