The Zinal Glacier, located in the picturesque Val d'Anniviers, is one of the hidden natural treasures of Valais. It is formed by the harmonious meeting of three distinct glaciers: the Grand Cornier, the Durant, and the Mountet.
Accessible only in winter, this natural wonder offers breathtaking glacial landscapes and an unforgettable hiking experience.
In this article, we will guide you so that you can fully enjoy this glacial adventure!
Route accessible to both amateur and experienced hikers.
Difficulty: medium.
Attention! Since the path is not entirely secured/marked, the Val d'Anniviers recommends hiring a professional guide. Each hiker setting out alone exposes themselves to their own risks and dangers, even though the route remains quite accessible. With snowshoes on, expect around 5 hours of walking round trip with an elevation gain of 500m over approximately 11km.

This hike will take you through breathtaking alpine landscapes, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and sparkling glaciers!
How to get there:
Departure from the Zinal Parking: Start your hike at the Plats de la Lée parking lot (paid) located at the end of the resort.
Accessible by public transport (bus) from Sierre. Get off at the "Plats de La Lée" stop. Make sure to have enough water, food, appropriate clothing, and a first aid kit. Hiking poles and a headlamp are welcome in addition to snowshoes and good walking shoes!
Check the weather conditions and the state of the trails before leaving and refer to the instructions from your potential guide.
Follow the marked trail: From the parking lot, follow the marked trail that starts nearby. The adventure begins by walking along the Nordic ski track, alongside the Naviscence. Be sure to follow the signs along the way. You will pass the Vichiesso cheese cellar, as well as a lovely wooden footbridge that will indicate the path to take. Don't hesitate to ask for directions if in doubt.
The ascent can be steep in places, so take your time and take breaks if necessary to catch your breath and admire the scenery.

Arrival at the Zinal Glacier: After about 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking, you will finally reach the Zinal Glacier. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of this majestic glacier and the surrounding alpine landscapes. Beneath the frozen surface, spectacular caves form, sculpted by the tumultuous torrents that wind beneath the glacier, creating labyrinthine passages that can extend nearly 200 meters.
Take the time to admire the natural beauty of this unique place and capture some unforgettable memories!
Return: After exploring the glacier and enjoying the view, it is time to begin your descent back to Zinal. Simply follow the same path in reverse to return to the starting parking area.
Make sure to always respect nature and follow safety rules in the mountains during your hike.
On your snowshoes!
Your friend Theo.
